MSK disorders burden the healthcare system and society

July 13,2021

About 1.71 billion people are suffering from MSK disorders around the globe. Patients with MSK disorders often experience chronic pain and physical limitations that hinder them to actively participate in occupational and societal activities. An extensive research study related to MSK disorders conducted by Global Burden of Disease pointed that MSK issues such as low back pains lead to most years lived with disability and is the reason for the highest disability burden in 134 countries out of 204 countries evaluated.

The disability and MSK pains can affect the mental health of the patient along with the physical health. According to research that focused on the relationship between depression and MSK pain, the acute pain and physical limitation due to MSK disorders lead to anxiety, depression, and poor quality of life.

The severity of the issue burdens primary care providers with a huge responsibility. Primary Care Physicians prescribe opioids, imaging, and other expensive treatments to satisfy their patients and reduce their pain as fast as possible. Various researchers advocate an alternative treatment that can help physicians avoid unnecessary tests and treatments. They propose that prescribing rehabilitation therapies is an effective measure to treat musculoskeletal disorders. A recent study focusing on WHO’s initiative, ‘Rehabilitation 2030: A Call for Action’ , points out that rehabilitation therapy can enhance physical mobility and participation outcomes of the patient which can result in societal and occupational productivity.

According to a report by WHO, 2.41 billion people needed physical therapies in 2019 around the world that points to 310 million years lost due to disabilities. In such times, digital healthcare platforms like BlueJay Mobile Health can considerably facilitate the healthcare providers.
